Lee Miles is a partner in our Sydney biotechnology team. He provides a range of intellectual property services to clients, with experience in IP strategy and counselling, preparing and prosecuting patent applications, coordinating prosecution of global patent portfolios, providing patentability, validity and freedom-to-operate opinions, and providing commercially relevant advice to assist clients in developing strong protection of their intellectual property. Lee has been recognised as an MIP Rising Star every year since 2018. With a broad background in biological sciences, Lee has experience in a range of technology areas including genetics and genomics, gene silencing, gene editing, cloning and expression, antibodies and immunology, gene therapy, diagnostics and vaccine development. His varied technical experience means that he is well-positioned to assist clients in a range of sectors within the life science space. However, Lee has a particular interest in the AgTech sector, including plant breeder's rights. Prior to joining the patent attorney profession, Lee completed an agricultural science degree at the University of Sydney, during which he developed a strong interest in animal and plant genetics and genomics. He was later awarded a PhD from the University of Sydney for his research related to genetic mapping and QTL analysis in saltwater crocodiles which took him to the University of Georgia in the United States. Lee’s research has been published in a number peer-reviewed scientific journals and industry reports, including publications in Science, PLos One, BMC Genomics, Animal Genetics, Journal of Virology and Immunogenics (among others). Lee has retained his interest in this field of research through his involvement with industry and the IUCN-SSC Crocodile Specialist Group. Immediately prior to joining our firm, Lee also worked at Sigma-Aldrich within their Custom Products group, where he gained experience in RNA interference (RNAi) and gene editing technologies, as well as immunology and cell culture. Although Lee is based in Sydney and enjoys assisting his Sydney clients, he works with a range of clients both domestically and abroad, including start-up companies, universities, research institutes and large multi-nationals. Lee is a registered Australian and New Zealand Patent Attorney.
