Mr. Paul Yovich SC, Barrister, Francis Burt Chambers
Paul Yovich SC has been a barrister at Francis Burt Chambers since 2011, having formerly been a Senior State Prosecutor at the office of the DPP (WA), where he worked for 18 years. He practices primarily in criminal law at trial and appeal level, with something of a specialty in appeal work, and he also does professional disciplinary and regulatory work and has appeared at a number of significant coronial inquiries, including the inquest into the deaths of 50 asylum seekers aboard SIEV 221 at Christmas Island. He is a regular presenter of seminars on advocacy and criminal law topics, and was appointed Senior Counsel on 1 December 2015.
Mr. Bob Davey, Independent Crash Consultant, Motor Vehicle Accident Consultant
Robert Davey has worked in law enforcement for the past 30 years as a Police officer (16 years) and later as a self-employed forensic crash consultant working for the prosecution and defence. During this time he provided advice to the DPP of WA, insurance companies, ICWA, and defence lawyers. Robert holds the internationally accepted City and Guilds Certificate in Crash Reconstruction and also Bachelor of Science. Tutor for DeMontfort University (UK) since 2000. Robert is accepted in all court Jurisdictions as an expert witness. Crash investigation now includes the interpretation of electronic data from numerous sources including airbag sensors, video cameras and on-board computers. Robert has taken a particular interest in this field and recently attended a course in Sydney run by Police officers and specialists from the USA. Furthermore, he has also attended courses in computer animation and has software (ARAS360) which he also believes to be an important tool when attempting to determine the circumstances of a crash. Robert is available 24 hours a day to attend crash scenes and provide opinion or advice.
Ms. Katherine Dowling, Senior Lawyer, Curt Hoffmann & Co
Katherine graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) and Law from the University of Western Australia. She commenced her legal career at an international law firm, working in commercial civil litigation. She quickly realised, however, that she enjoys advocacy and working with ordinary people so started practicing in criminal law after completing her restricted practice. Katherine provides advice and representation in all areas of criminal and traffic law. She has extensive experience in the Supreme, District and Magistrates Court jurisdictions. She is counsel in jury trials, pre-trial applications and sentencing hearings. She has also assisted and briefed other prominent barristers. Katherine has outstanding communication and interpersonal skills and prides herself on her ability to establish excellent working relationships with her clients and peers to ensure that matters are resolved in a professional, practical and cost-efficient manner. She has been repeatedly recognised as a leader in her field of criminal law, evidenced by her nomination in Doyles Guide from 2018-2023. In addition to her legal work, Katherine has sat as an adjudicator for disciplinary hearings on the Football West Tribunal, the WACA Tribunal & the Rugby WA Judiciary, was a committee member of the Criminal Lawyers Association from 2020.
