Chris Newton, Barrister, Carbolic Chambers
Chris Newton grew up on the land on a wool property at Stanthorpe so has a rural background. He has been in practice at the private Queensland Bar since January 1976 with a wide and varied practice, but a concentration on personal injuries litigation, estate litigation and alternative dispute resolution including mediation. He is a qualified mediator and case appraiser of the Supreme Court of Queensland, and a nationally accredited mediator. Chris has undertaken a particular interest in mediation and alternative dispute resolution in which the Queensland Bar took a leading role in encouraging ADR. Chris was the Chairman of the Settlement Week Committee in the early years when legal personnel were being encouraged to use the process. Chris continues to have a general practice with a concentration in the common law areas but also does wills and estate work on a regular basis.
Stephen Hughes, Special Counsel, Travis Schultz
Stephen Hughes, a QLS accredited specialist, is a workplace relations and personal injuries lawyer with over 30 years' experience. Stephen's practice to date has a substantial litigation focus in State and Federal courts and Commissions. Stephen is regularly invited to speak and chair at numerous specialist conferences on work health and safety, employment law, discrimination, bullying, harassment, social media and personal injuries law. Since 1993, Stephen has been the Honorary Solicitor and an ex officio Board Member for the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors Inc. In 2021 Stephen was awarded an ASORC Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his many decades of service.

Scott Keft is a Special Counsel in our compensation law team in our Brisbane office. He has over 25 years’ experience practicing in compensation. Scott is a Queensland Law Society accredited specialist. Scott is also a member of the Serious Injury Team (QLD). Scott is a tenacious and driven lawyer with an ability to effectively cut through complex issues and resolve disputes. He has achieved significant success across many cases throughout his career. Scott is a member of the Queensland Law Society and the Australian Lawyers Alliance. He is also a lifetime member of the Cootharinga Society, a Townsville organisation which provides care for the severely disabled.

Kate Avery is a principal of Kare Lawyers. She has worked exclusively in personal injuries litigation for 22 years and has been a Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in Personal Injuries since 2005. Kate is a former sessional academic in the QUT Legal Practice Course where she conducted the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act workshop. She currently sits on the QLS Advisory Committee for Personal Injuries Specialist Accreditation.
