Dr Gillian Dempsey, Barrister, Denning ChambersGillian Dempsey has practised at the Queensland Bar for over 16 years., Her practice is inter-jurisdictional and takes her often to New South Wales, and the ACT. She holds a Doctorate in law and economics (with an, Australian Postgraduate Award) and a first class honours degree in laws, (with prizes including the Blackburn Medal for Research in Law and the, Freehill Hollingdale and Page Award for Commercial Studies in Law and, multiple subject prizes) from the Australian National University. She has, taught accounting and taxation whilst a lecturer at the Department of, Commerce, ANU and has a particular interest in accounting for intangibles., Gillian's practice is corporate and commercial primarily in relation to matters, such as: commercial contract disputes; misleading and deceptive conduct;, liability for defective financial advice; breach of directors duties;, insolvency; breach of copyrights and trade mark appeals and some, commercially oriented administrative law matters such as coal-seam gas, matters and AQIS quarantines. Her recent appellate matters include defending an appeal against monies returned to her client under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002; resisting an appeal to the Full Federal Court in relation to whether a blog is in "trade and commerce" and an appeal to the Full Federal Court as to whether settlement of a s588G insolvent trading claim amounts to a contingent liability for the purposes of uncommercial transactions. Dr Dempsey's specialties include: Commercial litigation; Corporations Law; Liability for defective financial advice; Contract; Equity; Corporate Insolvency and Restructuring; Intellectual Property; Taxation of, Companies, Partnerships and Trusts; Forensic accounting; Company, Accounting; Accounting for software development costs: electronic, discovery and systems architecture and design.

Brett Doyle, Senior Consultant, Ashurst
Brett Doyle is both a lawyer and a registered trade mark attorney with over 30 years' experience in intellectual property. Brett is the delegate for the International Trademark Association on IP Australia's Trade Marks and Designs Consultation Group. He is on the Geographical Indications Committee for Marques, (European Trade Mark Association). He was previously a partner in a major international law firm; has worked at specialist patent and trade mark attorney firms, as well as holding the position of the General / IP Counsel for an Australian advertising agency. Brett has acted in all manner of IP issues including contentious disputes, administrative proceedings and non-contentious contractual and licensing matters. He has advised on the strategic development and protection of trade mark portfolios, including removal, opposition and infringement actions. Brett's combination of firm and in-house positions gives clients the benefit of significant specialist knowledge coupled with the commercial experience to provide succinct and practical advice.
