Children with Catastrophic Injury Claims: The Pivotal Role of the OT Report in Quantifying Damages
In cases where children have suffered a catastrophic injury, the OT report is central in the work of the lawyer building the claim for damages, in sourcing other opinions, costings from builders and other medical specialists. Examine:
- Assessment, with costings of care over and above that of a typically developing child
- Impact on the family of supporting a child with catastrophic injuries

Ms Stephenson graduated from the University of Queensland in 1984, and has been practicing continuously for over 40 years. She is highly experienced in medicolegal assessment, total and permanent disability assessment, activities of daily living assessment, independent living needs assessment and functional capacity assessment. She has worked in occupational rehabilitation for many years conducting functional capacity assessments, worksite visits, designing return to work programs and case management of injured workers. She has been in private practice for many years and established and has consulted to industry, insurers, commonwealth organisations, individuals and private organisations. Ms Stephenson has expertise in a range of conditions including respiratory and dust diseases and abuse claims. She has been conducting medicolegal assessments for more than 15 years and is an experienced expert witness. She provides medicolegal assessments for personal injury, medical negligence and workplace and industrial accidents. Ms Stephenson specialises in assessing complex and catastrophically injured cases. She continually develops her knowledge and skills by regularly attending training courses and conferences to adopt best practice in medicolegal reporting.

Paul Blacket SC was admitted to the Bar in 1978, having served his apprenticeship for five years as both Articled Clerk and employed Solicitor. He took Silk in 1999 and practices at 13th Floor, St James Hall in a wide range of matters including catastrophic and major personal injury, professional negligence, appellate work, administrative work, particularly involving professional misconduct, and work generally in relation to insurance. He has also practised extensively in Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation and has been at various times a Supreme and District Court, and Dust Diseases Tribunal Mediator, Arbitrator and Contributions Assessor. He has been extensively involved recently and for the last three years in the matter of Beckett v The State of New South Wales which concluded before Christmas after thirty-one days before Justice Harrison, having been once to the High Court and twice to the Court of Appeal on the way. He is interested in Aviation Law and Medical Malpractice and sees the potential for common lawyers in many aspects and complexities of professional sport and law. He has provided pro bono sports law assistance to a number of professional and amateur sports players.
