You have just 10 minutes to catch their attention and address what will define the case. How can you be effective? The not to be missed presentation will cover aspects of closing addresses in criminal and Magistrates Court proceedings.

Justin Hannebery KC, Crockett Chambers
Justin is a King's Counsel practising in Victoria and other Australian jurisdictions in all Criminal Law, OHS matters, coronial inquests, professional disciplinary tribunals and Royal Commissions. He is the current President of the Victorian Bar. He has appeared extensively in Supreme Court trials and bail applications. He has appeared in appeals in the High Court and the Court of Appeal. He appeared in the 'Lawyer X' Royal Commission. He is experienced in Confiscation Act matters both in the drafting of applications and in courtroom advocacy. Justin has undertaken the Australian Advocacy Institute’s teacher training program and has regularly assisted with the Bar Readers' course. Justin was elected to the current Bar Council in November 2024, for his 16th term since 2003. He was elected to serve President of the Victorian Bar on 12 December 2024. From 2018 until 2020 he was a Director of the Law Council of Australia. He has served on the Bar Council Executive. He has served multiple terms on the committee of the Criminal Bar Association and has edited the CBA newsletter. He served on the Indictable Crime Certificate Committee. Justin has been a leading counsel for Victoria Legal Aid's Trial Counsel Development Program since 2011. Justin has been a member of Crockett Chambers since 2005. He has been mentor to nine readers, namely Kier Dernelly, Deanna Caruso, Kelly McKay, Adrian Bates, Angela Wong, Samantha Holmes, Brett O'Sullivan, David Carolan and Joanne Poole. Justin was a County Court Judge from 2020 until 2022. Justin is on the Victoria Legal Aid Preferred Trial Counsel List. In 2019 he was ranked by Doyle's Guide to be Leading Senior Counsel in Criminal Law.

Liam practises in public and administrative law, common law, regulatory law, quasi-criminal and criminal law. He regularly appears in the County Court and the Magistrates' Court. He has significant experience in matters under the Serious Offenders Act 2018, and under the Crimes Mental Impairment (Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997. Liam is experienced in regulatory prosecutions and in professional disciplinary matters. He also maintains an appellate practice relating to criminal law matters. He appears in coronial inquests, judicial review proceedings, public interest immunity matters, as well as confidentiality and suppression order proceedings. He also appears in VCAT in public law and human rights matters, merits review proceedings, privacy law and professional conduct matters. Liam in currently participating in the 2024 VLA Trial Counsel Development Program.
