The Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG was Australia’s longest serving judge when he retired from judicial office in 2009, as a Justice of the High Court of Australia.  Prior to that appointment he had served as Deputy President of the Arbitration Commission; Chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission; Judge of the Federal Court of Australia and President of the NSW Court of Appeal. Additionally, he has undertaken many tasks for the United Nations and other international bodies, concerned with upholding universal human rights.  These have included as Special Representative of the Secretary General for Human Rights in Cambodia (1993-6) and Chair of the UN Commission of Inquiry on North Korea (2013-14).  He has also served as President of the International Commission of Jurists (1995-8).  He was awarded the Australian Human Rights Medal (1991); the Gruber Justice Prize (USA, 2014) and a number of honorary degrees.
